PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
The
Teacher Center offers educators a variety of professional development
designs. Each delivery method design is based upon current research
in the field. The services offered can meet the needs of an individual
educator, a small group, or a school. Programs are provided at an
awareness level, skill level and/or leadership proficiency level.
Anyone may participate in our courses or workshops, but only consortium
members are permitted to partake of the other services. Take a look
at our offerings to see which appeal to you!
Courses and Workshops
Most courses are offered for inservice credit and centers around
a content area or teaching method. Each credit is fifteen hours.
A graduate course from NYSUT's Effective Teaching Program is available
each semester as well. Workshops are generally between two and three
hours and are offered in a variety of areas. Teachers should check
with their districts regarding credit eligibility.
Teacher Leadership Programs
Training programs are provided that support teachers who enjoy working
with adult learners. Participants learn how to create training modules,
gain knowledge on adult learning theory, see how to utilize communication
skills in the process of facilitation, and acquire good presentation
skills.
School-Community Programs
The Center offers workshops through local PTAs, cosponsors a
Parent University, and provides periodic Parent Leadership Training.
Parents trained through these programs conduct community discussion
circles.
New Teacher Programs
A number of workshops are offered throughout the year to support
the new teachers in our consortium. Professional Circles are provided
for on-going support. Specific books in our Lending Library were
purchased with the new teacher in mind. Our program has expanded
to address the needs of second and third year teachers as well.
The Key Program: "On Demand and By Design"
Working in collaboration with the Center, teachers may develop their
own course / workshop, identify the instructor, establish the site
and dates of sessions, and gather their own group who wish to participate.
Upon approval and sufficient grant funds, the Center will fund these
programs in a school / district.
Lending Library
Professional development books, videos and teaching aide booklets
may be borrowed for a period of two weeks. It is suggested you make
an appointment to visit the Center to browse through the shelves.
Laptop Loans
Several DELL laptops are available
for loan. Call the Center to reserve one and bring your driver’s
license and a $20 refundable deposit (cash or check).
